Everyday Learning

In order to teach mathematics we need to show children the importance of 'why' we need certain skills such as skip counting. "Mathematics learning becomes more meaningful when children know what they are doing and why" (Jung, & Conderman, 2013) Below are a list of real life examples of when we might use these skills.

Telling Time

When we tell the time we often skip count by 5s and 10s. For example if the time is 8:10 a.m. students can count by 5s to find out when it will be 8:30 a.m. Using this technique reinforces the skill of skip counting.

Using Sport Games

The scoring is sport games can often included skip counting such as basketball and football. For example in basketball when a team scores they get 2 points if a play was to shoot 5 baskets we can count 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. This is also show in football as a goal is worth 6 points which means 5 goals would count as 6, 12, 18, 24, 30.

Money

When we count money we are often skip counting without knowing. For example if we have five 10-cent pieces we would count 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 giving us 50 cents. This can also be achieved if we use 5 cent, 20 cent, 50 cent or 2-dollar coins.
